Fire Sprinkler Initiative Update - Bringing Safety Home
June 2009

Fire sprinklers save lives and NFPA is committed to doing all we can to bring this higher level of safety home.

Home fire sprinklers cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about 80%. Sprinkler advocates across the country have asked for a coordinated effort to encourage the use of home fire sprinklers. NFPA has launched that effort through the Fire Sprinkler Initiative: Bringing Safety Home.

The initiative includes a variety of proven, effective ways that home fire sprinkler advocates can communicate the impact of sprinklers. Fire Sprinkler Initiative Update will provide the latest happenings each month.

Our Web site provides resources for the fire service and other sprinkler advocates who want to demonstrate the need for home fire sprinklers in their communities.

ADVOCACY
Live burns demonstrate life-saving technology

Live BurnNFPA joined the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition for several live burn events to demonstrate the effectiveness of home fire sprinklers. The events, one in Plymouth, Mass. and one in Chicago, Ill., both featured identically furnished, side-by-side rooms, with one protected by sprinklers and the other unprotected. After being lit on fire, the unprotected room burned out of control, reaching the flashover stage within minutes. The firefighters on-hand put out the fire, revealing significant property and structural damage. Next, the room protected by home fire sprinklers was set on fire. The sprinklers activated once the temperature in the room reached a pre-set degree. The sprinkler quickly controlled the heat, flames and smoke, putting out the fire on its own in minutes. For a view of both burns, please see the video.

Smoke Alarms are Enough: Are they?
There is no debate that smoke alarms save lives, but can more be done? Studies have shown that young children and older adults do not respond well to the high frequency of most smoke alarms. Home fire sprinkler systems can give families precious time to get out of a dwelling safely. Read more about this important topic in Maria Figueroa’s blog post on the Fire Sprinkler Initiative Blog.

Extreme Home Makeover features top of the line fire protection in recent build
After a series of incredible losses, a family in Connecticut, who lost their home to fire, now have a safer place to live thanks to “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” During the episode, which aired in early February on ABC, the new house for the Girard family of Voluntown, Conn. was equipped with home fire sprinklers. Studies have shown that having home fire sprinklers in your home can reduce your chances of dying from a house fire by 80 percent. We applaud “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” for their commitment to fire safety and hope that they continue to use this proven, lifesaving technology in their future builds.

FORUM

NEW!! Discussion Forum
In addition to the Fire Sprinkler Initiative blog, we are pleased to launch the Fire Sprinkler Initiative discussion forum. This discussion forum has been set up to encourage dialogue among fire sprinkler advocates across the country. With anti-sprinkler legislation cropping up across the nation, it is now more important than ever for advocates to trade best practices on how they defeated legislation in their own states with others who face the same struggle, as well as discuss how to introduce sprinkler requirements to their communities. We look forward to the engaging discussions and advice on fire sprinkler advocacy that are to come!
