Fire sprinklers save lives and NFPA is committed to doing all we can to bring this higher level of safety home.
Home fire sprinklers cut the risk of dying in a home fire by about 80%. Sprinkler advocates across the country have asked for a coordinated effort to encourage the use of home fire sprinklers. NFPA has launched that effort through the "Fire Sprinkler Initiative: Bringing Safety Home."
The initiative includes a variety of proven, effective ways that home fire sprinkler advocates can communicate the impact of sprinklers. Fire Sprinkler Initiative Update will provide the latest happenings each month.
Our Web site provides resources for the fire service and other sprinkler advocates who want to demonstrate the need for home fire sprinklers in their community.

The Case for Home Fire Sprinklers

The goal of NFPA's new advocacy campaign, "Fire Sprinkler Initiative: Bringing Safety Home," is to help communities nationwide institute ordinances requiring sprinklers in every new one- and two-family home. "The Case for Home Fire Sprinklers," the cover story in the current NFPA Journal, describes in compelling detail why home sprinklers are key to reducing the fire problem in the United States. The story introduces readers to the initiative's purpose and goals, as well as to advocates who have successfully sponsored legislation that resulted in home fire sprinkler ordinances. The story also includes a detailed introduction to the initiative's Web site and its wealth of resources designed to help you plan and execute a sprinkler campaign in your community. "Education is a huge part of what these efforts are about," says Cathleen Vitale, who was instrumental in getting a home fire sprinkler ordinance passed in her Maryland community. "Building a home is more than selecting a grade of carpet, or deciding if you want solid cherry cabinets. Sprinklers are common sense."

Big Win in Fight Against Anti-Sprinkler Legislation
The efforts of fire safety advocates to fight anti-sprinkler legislation recently had a great success. In Illinois, a bill that would have restricted a community's ability to adopt home fire sprinkler requirements was defeated. A legislative committee voted down the anti-sprinkler bill 6-3 after a dedicated group of grassroots advocates made their voices heard. The group testified at the committee hearing to reinforce the importance of this life-saving technology.
"Thanks to everyone in the fire service who is working to stop anti-sprinkler bills," said Jim Shannon, president of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). "Anti-sprinkler bills are being pushed by sprinkler opponents all over the country to take away a community's ability to protect its citizens with this life-saving equipment. The fire service and other sprinkler advocates worked to defeat this safety threat in Illinois, but the threat of anti-sprinkler bills continues to be very real in other states."
